ICONICBIRD_BLUE_CMYK.jpgHelp us find Australia’s Favourite Bird. We would like to invite you to be involved in the first ever poll to find Australia’s Favourite Bird. Australia’s Favourite Bird Vote will be happening from 7 September and culminating in Bird Week, 19 to 25 October 2013, a national week of celebration and bird appreciation. With the goal of inspiring Australians to take action and get involved in bird conservation, we are inviting people to Meet the neighbours and vote for Australia’s Favourite Bird in a fun, feathered election.

Across our vast continent we live side by side with over 860 bird species, so no matter where we are in the country birds are a feature of our everyday lives. We see them on the way to work, in the garden, down at the park, along our beaches or on our holidays. Getting to know local birds is as easy as looking out the window or stepping out the front door. BirdLife Australia’s job is to help people get to know Australia’s birds and appreciate the important role they play as indicators of the health of our environment.

You can take part in this year’s vote in one of two ways.

1. Campaign for your favourite bird Select one of the 52 birds included in this year’s poll and campaign for your bird to win votes amongst your supporters, customers and community. It may be a bird that is symbolic to you, or a bird that captures your imagination and you would like other people to know about. As a campaigner you will have the opportunity to tell everyone why they should vote for your chosen bird. This can be done in the traditional print ways or you can use your creativity and develop audio or video campaign messages to be posted online in support of your chosen bird. You will be promoted alongside your chosen bird on our voting website and in supporting communications and media. It’s up to you how much or how little effort you put into campaigning, but of course the more effort, the more likely your bird will attract votes!

2. Promote the vote We invite you to promote the vote through your communications channels and amongst your supporters, customers, staff and communities, whether you choose to campaign for your favourite bird or not. All voters are automatically entered into draw for a range of exciting prizes including a holiday at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat in Queensland. As a campaigner and/or vote promoter you will be profiled as supporting the Vote. BirdLife will support you in the lead up to and during the week with fun information about birds, their habitats and antics and how they are faring in the polls for you to share with your community and audiences. BirdLife Australia has an extensive nationwide network of branches and community affiliates and members. Becoming involved with our “Meet the Neighbours” initiative will put you in contact with this audience.

On a serious note, it’s important we do what we can to help save and sustain Australia’s native birds. They provide vital information about the state of our natural world. They are highly sensitive and responsive to change and often provide us with an early indication of problems in our environment. BirdLife Australia monitors the health of Australia’s bird populations and their habitats, finds solutions for conservation problems and advocates for birds and their habitats. As the voice for Australia’s native birds, we hope you will join in helping us find Australia’s favourite bird. Please select your bird from the attached list. These species have been selected as representatives of the common native species that we encounter in our day to day lives. Our Bird Week Project Manager Kerryn will be in touch with you shortly to help you get your campaign up and running.
